NEW IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

August 2, 2010

All students entering Kindergarten must have had two (2) doses of Varicella / Chickenpox vaccine.

No “history of disease” (parent statement) will be accepted.


What Does the School Nurse Do?

 

The primary role of the School Nurse is to support student learning. The nurse accomplishes this by implementing strategies that promote student and staff health and safety. The school nurse is responsible in providing health education, such as teaching children ways to stay healthy, promoting adaption to health care challenges, being an advocate for students, encouraging autonomy and making a safe environment to learn.


As the health services expert, the School Nurse serves as the health professional for the school community and provides the following services:

Assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of student health concerns; illness and injury assessments and interventions

Screening for health factors impacting student education

Individualized Nursing Care Plans and services for students with disabilities and/or health conditions that require modifications to facilitate learning

Chronic disease management and education

Medication administration

Assessment and interventions for students with mental health needs

Activities and education to promote health and prevent teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, tobacco use and alcohol and substance abuse
